This painting contains three of my favourite subjects: the hare, woods, and stars. All are repeated motifs in my works, and I am drawn time and again to paint them. This is possibly the first time I had painted all three together (at least in a completed work).

The running solitary hare is a symbol of freedom, the woods are the wild places of the earth ungoverned by man, and the stars represent wonder at the vast beauty of creation.
